Motivation Enhancement Therapy for Deaddiction

What is MET ?

MET or Motivational Enhancement Therapy is a type of motivational counseling that helps people overcome their fear about entering treatment and quitting their drug usage or other serious addictions.

How does it work ?

MET for deaddiction help addicts understand their problem and change them. By enhancing awareness of a problem, altering any self-defeating ideas about the situation, and building confidence to change, MET focuses on developing intrinsic motivation. Rather than recognizing a problem and advising a client on what to do about it, the therapist encourages the patient to create self-motivating statements that demonstrate a clear awareness of the situation and a commitment to change.

Five motivational principles of the therapy :

  •  Express Empathy :This method entails assisting individuals in developing and expressing empathy for others. The idea is to assist them in comprehending how their actions affect others. People may feel more driven to change after having this information.
  •  Avoid argumentation:A therapist will avoid criticizing a person or their conduct because this is regarded to cause defensiveness and resistance.
  •  Develop discrepancy : The therapist uses MET to draw attention to the gap between an individual's intended state of being and their real-life state of being. This disparity can help people recognize how their present actions prevent them from attaining their objectives, and it can also act as a strong motivator for behavior change.
  •  Acceptance of resistance : Instead of engaging the individual's resistance directly, the therapist frequently attempts to defuse it by contemplative listening or simply agreeing with what they are expressing.
  •  Support self-efficiency: One of a therapist's responsibilities is to assist patients in becoming aware of their ability to complete the steps required for transformation effectively.

Benefits of MET :

MET is a non-judgmental, supportive, and client-centered therapy. It fosters a sense of strength and inspiration since it heavily emphasizes individual choice.

MET is a time-limited therapy strategy that requires four to six sessions to complete.
